Liverpool and Tottenham supporters have been in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern this week, what with the Reds letting slip a three-goal lead to only draw with Sevilla on Tuesday, while Spurs overcame Borussia Dortmund to top Group H on the same night.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool knew that victory in Spain on Tuesday would secure them first place in their Champions League group, and were well on course to do so as a Roberto Firmino brace alongside Sadio Mane’s fourth of the season gave them a 3-0 lead at half time. However, their defensive frailties were exposed once again in the second half to leave the Merseyside giants waiting to book their place in the last 16. Whereas things were much better for Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs as goals from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min saw them come from behind to beat Dortmund on Tuesday, thus securing them top spot in a group which also includes European champions Real Madrid.
Thus, there have been differing moods among both sets of supporters in the Tavern this week, although both are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mail which suggests that the Premier League duo are keeping tabs on Stevenage starlet Ben Wilmot.
The 18-year-old defender came up through the ranks at Broadhall Way to earn his senior debut for the League Two club last month, playing 120 minutes in their EFL Trophy defeat to MK Dons at the stadium:mk.
And the Englishman has since added another senior appearance to his name by starting their 3-1 win over Brighton’s Under-23 side in the same competition, and it was at that game that scouts from Liverpool and Tottenham, amongst many others, were reportedly in attendance.
And with a place on Stevenage’s substitute’s bench against Coventry City earlier this week, it’s surely just a matter of time before his makes his league debut for the Boro, and one senses that further impressive efforts for Darren Sarll’s side is likely to intensify the interest in his services even more.
Landlord’s verdict: He may not have yet made his league debut, but 18-year-old Ben Wilmot has done enough in two EFL Trophy games to attract interest from some of England’s biggest clubs.
The defender played 120 minutes of Stevenage’s penalty shootout defeat to MK Dons last month before impressing in their 3-1 win over Brighton’s Under-23s a few weeks ago, a game in which scouts from Liverpool and Tottenham, amongst others, were in attendance.
And with both sides having placed emphasis on young players in recent years, notably Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs, they could be the perfect destinations for Wilmot to go on and fulfil his potential.
But whether either do indeed firm up their interest in the young starlet remains to be seen.
