“But aren’t deals between Barcelona and Liverpool or Arsenal ones that see their best players go to Spain?” quipped a Manchester United fan here in the Transfer Tavern upon reading Mundo Deportivo’s report that the Reds and Gunners are interested in Rafinha.
Although his argument annoyed both sets of supporters, there is a point to it, with the likes of Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano having headed from Anfield to the Camp Nou, while Barca have poached top quality players such as Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas from the north Londoners in recent memory.
However, Mundo Deportivo believe that this trend could be reversed this summer, with Rafinha wanted by both English heavyweights.
The Spanish outlet concede that no firm approaches have been made, although that could change ahead of the looming transfer window, especially if either club lose a key attacking midfielder.
Rafinha, who can play as a No.10 or on the flanks, has a release clause of €75m (£64.9m) in his Barca contract, but it’s unlikely he will command a fee anywhere near that sum, given he’s not seen as one of the key players in the Catalans’ squad – he’s played around two-thirds of their La Liga minutes this term.
