Liverpool beat Manchester United to Xherdan Shaqiri

Liverpool got the majority of their transfer business done early in the window this summer and it appears that one move may have paid off more than others.

According to a report by Blick in Switzerland, Xherdan Shaqiri had a number of clubs interested in him following his decision to leave Stoke City.

The winger was thought to have attracted the likes of Southampton, West Ham United and Manchester United, and it is being claimed Jurgen Klopp swooped in before Jose Mourinho could even talk to the 26-year-old.

It is believed the Anfield boss managed to convince Shaqiri to make his mind up quickly and completed a £13million move to the club following the conclusion of Switzerland’s World Cup campaign.

He made his debut for his new side in their 4-0 victory against West Ham United, coming on as a second-half substitute, and he is expected to continue to play a huge role from the bench for Liverpool throughout the season.

The Verdict:

Liverpool will be delighted that they beat one of their all-time rivals to Shaqiri’s signature.

The Switzerland international is not thought to have a starting role in the side, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Saido Mane picking up from where they left off last season.

However, at £13m and to bring him to Anfield rather than watch him go elsewhere, could just be one of their best pieces of business this summer.
