The Daily Mail have caused Liverpool fans to look slightly worried here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they claim manager Brendan Rodgers is effectively powerless when it comes to contract negotiations.
Liverpool are currently trying to tie down both Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling to new deals but with the owners and board playing hardball over the money being offered, talks have stalled and both players are thought to be considering their options.
The Reds boss claimed: ‘As a manager you want to give everything to the player to help them but ultimately if they, or more so their representative, decides the player needs to move, that is normally what happens.
‘I think this club has all the intention of wrapping these deals up but it’s not just the club, you have to remember that. There are two sides to it.’
Despite that, Rodgers has made it very clear how much he wants both the players to stay at Anfield and that the contract offer on the table for Sterling is a very decent one – and that he thinks the best place for the winger is on Merseyside.
Liverpool fans. How much influence do you think Rodgers has on the deals handed out to new players? Let us know your thoughts below.
