Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are discussing comments made by their popular manager, as they prepare for what they hope is a busy summer.
The Liverpool Echo quotes Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as urging the fans to be patient when judging his summer signings, using last summer’s acquisition of Roberto Firmino as a prime example to support his views.
Brazilian international Firmino arrived from Hoffenheim last summer for a £29m fee and initially struggled to make an impact in the Premier League. However, since taking 14 games to get off the mark, Firmino has scored 11 goals in his debut season and looks to be a solid acquisition.
Having netted 10 in the Premier League and contributing with seven assists, Firmino is set to finish the season as Liverpool’s most involved attacking player and Klopp has revealed he knew he was inheriting a talented asset when he took over in October.
“It wasn’t a surprise to me when I heard people questioning him. That’s how it is in Germany too. You don’t watch too much German football. You get a player from Hoffenheim in Germany and everyone thought: ‘oh, a nice signing Liverpool’.’
‘But not many people here knew him because he wasn’t from Bayern, he wasn’t from Dortmund. I knew about Roberto. When I heard that Liverpool had signed him I thought: ‘how have they done this?’
“What we can learn from Roberto’s situation going forward when it comes to next season’s signings is wait to make judgements. Don’t be too quick to judge players.”
The landlord agrees with Klopp’s views, especially as he feels Liverpool are in need of a major rebuild, and he hopes the supporters will be patient with any new additions to the squad.
