Roll back the clocks a week in the bar and you’d see Reds fans dancing on the tables as they celebrated Jurgen Klopp’s appointment, confident that the German would provide the spark to drastically improve their fortunes.
However, Klopp hasn’t made an immediate impression on results after two consecutive draws to open his tenure at Anfield and The Daily Mirror quote the former Borussia Dortmund boss as suggesting fans should lower their expectations.
“You all know that football is not the game where you can have the genius plan without Barcelona or Bayern Munich players. Against Kazan they made a goal, so okay, maybe one fault? Maybe a little bit more in two positions? But there are bigger mistakes in football.”
“But they got the goal and it was not an enjoyable game anymore. It was like ‘F***! Even when Klopp is on the side we don’t win 8-0!’ But that is the situation. It is a hard job, but I knew it would be. If I wanted it the easy way, then I would have stayed a little longer on holiday.”
Klopp’s early challenges at Anfield aren’t set to get any easier, with the Reds hosting Southampton tomorrow before travelling to defending-champions Chelsea next weekend.
The following Premier League fixtures then see the Merseyside outfit tackle Crystal Palace, Manchester City and Swansea; which indicate that Klopp’s project will be a long-term one and not a quick fix.
