Premier League champions Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign Lille midfielder Renato Sanches, as they look to replace the soon-to-be out of contract Georginio Wijnaldum.
It was recently reported by Canal Plus that Lille’s financial situation is currently dire as they have debts of between €130m and €200m (£117m and £180m). La Voix du Nord reported that Sanches’ January departure could not be excluded because of Les Dogues’ financial strains (as per GetFootballNewsFrance).
Liverpool could move for Sanches
French outlet Le10Sport have recently reported that Sanches has caught the eye of many English clubs and one of those clubs is Liverpool. If the contractual situation of Wijnaldum doesn’t get sorted out soon, the Reds could look to sign Sanches.
Would Sanches be a good replacement for Wijnaldum?
Jurgen Klopp happens to be a very attentive observer of the Portuguese midfielder and the former Bayern Munich man’s all-action profile appeals to the Liverpool boss. Barcelona are still looking to sign Wijnaldum and if the Dutchman does depart, Sanches could be the number one option to replace him.
Sanches would suit Liverpool
Sanches has been a regular for Lille this season and has made eight Ligue 1 appearances for cash-strapped side. He has even played twice in the Europa League, having scored once in Ligue 1 (as per Transfermarkt).
Sanches’ Lille teammate Jose Fonte has praised him as a player who can play at the biggest clubs. Fonte feels that Sanches can have ‘very very great career at the highest level’. Pep Guardiola has also previously expressed his admiration for the midfielder, hailing him as one of the best youngsters in Europe and lauding his ‘abundant quality and character’.
A comparison (via Soccerment) involving Sanches and Wijnaldum suggests that the Portuguese star could be a more than capable replacement for the Dutchman. He has outperformed Wijnaldum in many aspects in the current campaign.
This suggests that Sanches would a quality replacement for Wijnaldum and it would make sense for Liverpool to sign him.
