For the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, there is only one name that is being considered ahead of the January transfer window – Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman’s future at Southampton is looking increasingly bleak, and it’s fair to say that he’d be a fantastic fit at Anfield. Significantly, the chances of a move to Anfield in January appear to be increasing somewhat.
According to the Mirror, Southampton are ‘resigned’ to losing van Dijk in January, and one of the clubs that are keen on him are the Reds. Significantly, Liverpool are said to believe that they have a ‘genuine chance’ of landing the Dutchman, with Jurgen Klopp seemingly keen to make a move as soon as the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s Day.
This is huge news for Liverpool. They’re clearly confident that a deal will be possible in the new year, and that is enough to leave our resident Reds feeling rather excited.
In terms of what van Dijk would offer, and indeed why the Reds would be willing to spend so much on him, there is no limit to just how much of an impact he would have at Anfield. A strong central defender, van Dijk would add a plethora of qualities to the Liverpool defence. Leadership, consistency, aerial presence, tackling supremacy, positioning – van Dijk has it all.
There are a number of genuinely world-class players at Liverpool, and the addition of van Dijk would provide Klopp with yet another in the same class. This could be a huge move for the Reds.
A move remains some way off, but Liverpool are clearly keen to get a deal done, and their inner confidence can only be a good thing.
That being said, they need to move for him quickly, as they can’t afford to be left in the dark once again if they fail to secure a move. A new defender or two are essential purchases in January, and whilst van Dijk would be perfect, they must prepare in case they are unable to land him.
