The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling great after the acquisition of Fabinho, with the Champions League final now long in the memory.
Preparations for next season are already well underway, and Jurgen Klopp has quite the job on his hands.
One position that needs sorting is the defence. Virgil van Dijk desperately needs a more consistent partner, and that won’t be easy to find.
One player, though, that could be a good fit is England international Harry Maguire. Maguire was recently called up by Gareth Southgate for England’s World Cup squad, which is a testament to his quality.
Rated at £22.5 million by Transfer Markt, Maguire has enjoyed a sensational season in the defence for Leicester City. On first glance, he’s everything that you want in a defender – he’s incredibly consistent, he’s powerful, he’s fantastic in the air, and he’s also very aggressive in the tackle. Collectively, that makes him a fantastic threat at the back for opposition attackers.
However, beyond that, he’s also very solid with the ball at his feet, and he has become somewhat of a ball-playing defender for the Foxes as of late. He’s able to find teammates with brilliant passes, and he’s also comfortable moving the ball forward himself in an effort to spring an attack.
Alongside someone like Virgil van Dijk, then, Maguire would be a sensational fit. They have been two of the best performing Premier League defenders of the last few years, and if Klopp were to land Maguire – the Liverpool defence would arguably be as good as the attack.
