Daniel Sturridge is a player with bags of talent, but we haven’t seen that at Liverpool for a long time. Long ago, he was the most feared forward in the land, but his career quickly fell off as injury issues ravaged his time on Merseyside.
However, this season, something has changed. Though not yet a weekly starter, he’s making a serious impact at Liverpool, with a handful of crucial goals coming his way as of late. He’s not going to be the most important player at Anfield, but he’s got his own role to play, and a few months ago, that would have appeared impossible.
That gets you thinking, then, of the other players at Anfield that may be in a similar position. They may not currently be involved in the squad, and their talent may have been forgotten, but deep down, perhaps they can offer something. After all, many were brought in to the club to make an impact in a Liverpool shirt.
When discussing that though, it’s difficult not to turn towards Lazar Markovic and see a player deserving of another chance.
Signed when Brendan Rodgers was in charge, Markovic is obviously not a player that Klopp would necessarily choose, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t able to make an impact Anfield this season.
Not everyone can be a starter, and not everyone can be a crucial player. However, top teams need strength and quality in depth. That’s exactly what Daniel Sturridge will provide this season, and that’s exactly what Markovic could offer.
After all, there is a need for further attacking depth at Anfield. Xherdan Shaqiri was brought in to provide further quality beyond Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, but the Swiss international alone won’t be enough as the season progresses. Liverpool have got so many competitions that they’re a part of this season, and they can’t rely on just three wingers. Not to mention, Shaqiri may have found a new niche for himself in the heart of the midfield; meaning that he may be needed elsewhere.
Markovic, for his part, is a talented attacking midfielder in his own right. Offering solid dribbling, technique and pace, he’s able to make an impact going forward, even if he’s not quite as lethal as Sadio Mane or Mo Salah. Versatility is important to his game, given that he’s able to play across the attack, whilst at 24-years-old, he’s still a young player with potential.
Sure, you could look at Markovic’s record over the years – with two goals the most he’s ever scored in the league – as a reason why he may never be good enough. That might be right, but he’s also never made more than 12 league starts in a single season – so he’s never really had the chance to score many more. Indeed, the one game he has played for Liverpool this season, during pre-season, he scored a goal – and Klopp can’t really have asked for much more.
Make no mistake. Markovic won’t ever be as influential as Mane or Salah. That’s not the point, though. Not everyone can be a starter, and not everyone can be a crucial player. However, top teams need strength and quality in depth. That’s exactly what Daniel Sturridge will provide this season, and that’s exactly what Markovic could offer. He’s already on the books at the club, and so such a decision would carry little risk. Who knows, perhaps he could surprise Klopp.
