There’s some shock looks around the Football Transfer Tavern as The Mirror suggests that Liverpool are edging Manchester City in the race to sign Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao in the summer.
It is thought that the Portugal international will be available for around £12 million with Carlo Ancelotti viewing him as surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu.
The 26-year-old came very close to moving to the Premier League last summer as a season-long loan to Manchester United fell through at the last minute due to paperwork not being completed.
This saw him remaining with the La Liga outfit but he has been used sparingly by Ancelotti this term with just seven league appearances under his belt and that is likely to see him departing at the end of the season.
While Manchester United and Tottenham were both thought to hold an interest in the defender, not to mention Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City, it has come to our attention that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has entered the race.
With Champions League football almost guaranteed to be returning to Anfield next season, Coentrao may be interested in a move to the Merseyside club with talks reportedly ongoing with the club and his agent, Jorge Mendes.
The Reds had been using Aly Cissokho – on loan from Valencia – at left-back until Jon Flanagan replaced him there, but he will return to the La Liga outfit in the summer.
