Unfortunately there is more bad news for Wigan Athletic supporters inside the Football Transfer Tavern, as the Daily Mail have revealed that star striker Arouna Kone is looking for a move away from the DW Stadium this summer.
Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton are reportedly leading the chase for his signature, whilst newly promoted Crystal Palace also fancy adding the former Sevilla forward to their ranks.
The Ivory Coast international was hugely impressive for the Latics last season, scoring 13 goals and also helping them to a famous FA Cup win.
He cost just £3.5 million from Spanish club Levante the previous summer, although Wigan Athletic are thought to be demanding closer to £10 million for his services now.
Despite his goals, Kone could not prevent the Latics from dropping down to the Championship, and has now revealed he has no intention of leaving the Premier League.
He said: “You always have ambitions as a footballer, and I don’t intend to play in the English second division.
“Wigan have gone down, which is a real shame. It’s up to them to set out their stance about my situation. I aim to play for one of the best clubs in England, and I hope I will get the chance.”
Everton will consider themselves the favourites for his signature now former manager Roberto Martinez is in the hot seat, although Kone insists he has plenty of options.
“I’ve had plenty of approaches,” added Kone. “I can’t reveal the names of the clubs.
“But Crystal Palace have gone up, and from the moment a club is in the Premier League that is good for me.
“I’m under contract with Wigan for two more years. But if there is an offer that is good for both me and Wigan I will seek to leave.”
