Liverpool fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are left intrigued with news reported by Mail Online that the Reds are lining up a summer move for FC Twente defender Douglas as a replacement for the soon to retire Jamie Carragher.
The 25-year-old has previously been linked with a move to Newcastle United and the Magpies failed with a £4 million bid during the January transfer window yet it now seems that Brendan Rodgers has expressed an interest after realising the Brazilian will be available on a free transfer this summer.
The club are looking to become challengers for the top four once again but Rodgers will be given a relatively low £25 million to spend so he will need to be prudent in his purchases.
With a major priority in defence, Rodgers has eyed the Brazilian who has spent the last six years playing in Holland, as a cheap defensive option this summer. Anfield legend Carragher will retire while Martin Skrtel appears unsettled and Rodgers understands the need to strengthen his centre back partnership during the close season. The FC Twente man could be the perfect solution.
