Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side thump Swansea City 5-0 on Boxing Day to get back to winning ways in the Premier League, at the same time reclaiming fourth place in the table from Tottenham.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs eased past Southampton 5-2 earlier in the day to move above the Reds into the top four, but they were there a matter of hours as the Merseyside giants produced an impressive attacking display to see off the struggling Swans. A brace from Roberto Firmino as well as goals from Philippe Coutinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain secured a comprehensive victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men, in turn extending their unbeaten Premier League run to 11 matches.
Subsequently, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, although they are unlikely to be pleased with recent unwelcome reports from Corriere dello Sport (via Football Italia), which suggests that Emre Can could well move to Juventus next month.
The 23-year-old’s future has been subject of speculation for a while now given that his current contract expires at the end of the season, and as of yet no extension has been agreed.
And if the situation were to remain the same over the coming days and into January, the Germany international would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club, leaving Liverpool very much helpless regarding the midfielder’s next move.
And reports suggest that the Serie A champions, currently second in the Italian top-flight, could well make a move for Can in January in a bid to get their man, what with there reported interest from several other top European clubs, namely Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Manchester City.
Thus, this news is likely to disappoint our resident Liverpool fans and indeed manager Klopp, with it looking increasingly inevitable that Can will be leaving the club in 2018.
Landlord’s verdict: Emre Can’s future at Liverpool has been dominating the headlines for a while now, with it looking likelier by the day that the midfielder will be leaving the club next year.
Juventus have reportedly long held an interest in the 23-year-old as they seek to improve their ranks, and reports recently suggest that the Serie A champions could look to make a move for the Germany international in January to land their man.
Ultimately, this isn’t great news for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, what with Can playing an increasingly important role in his team in recent times, but it does appear that the Reds could be destined for January disappointment.
