Rodgers, who was sacked from his position at Anfield after three years on Sunday, has confirmed that he tried to beat Manchester United to the signature of Memphis Depay this summer.
United paid £25m for the Dutch international during the post-season break and Rodgers, at the time, claimed his side weren’t pursuing the player. However, speaking to Dutch magazine Voetbal International, he revealed the true story.
“PSV had given us permission to have conversations with him,”
“Apart from a huge talent, he came across as a good boy to me, but Liverpool were looking for a central striker and Memphis, until then, had primarily played as a left winger.”
Whether Depay would have been interested in a Liverpool move anyway is up for debate, as United have provided him with Champions League football as well as the chance to link-up with compatriot Louis Van Gaal.
