Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been more upbeat in the last few hours after seeing their side round off their excellent Champions League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 success over Cypriot outfit Apoel Nicosia at Wembley.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been going through a sticky patch in the Premier League recently, having won just one of their last six games, but in Europe they have been outstanding and topped a group which consisted of holders Real Madrid and 2013 runners-up Borussia Dortmund. And Spurs finished the group stages in fine style as goals from Fernando Llorente, Son Heung-min, and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou sealed an easy win for the North London outfit, who were one of four English teams to top their group alongside Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United.
Consequently, there have been many buoyant Spurs fans in the Tavern in the last few hours, many of whom are hoping they can translate their wonderful European form into their domestic excursions, starting against Stoke City at Wembley on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Tottenham supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they are set to reignite their interest in AC Milan attacker Suso.
The 24-year-old made the move to the Serie A giants back in 2015 after his contract expired at Liverpool, and he has since gone on to score 13 goals and lay on 18 assists in just 66 games for the club, six goals and six assists of which have come this season.
And it’s form which has reportedly attracted the interest of Pochettino’s Spurs, who shouldn’t be deterred by the youngster’s failure at Anfield, as he has more than proven his worth and could actually seek to prove a point were he to return to England.
Ultimately, Suso only managed 21 first team appearances at Liverpool between 2012 and 2015, this all after coming up through the ranks in the few years previous to his senior debut.
There were glimpses of brilliance when the Spain international took to the field for the Reds, but in the end it didn’t work out for him.
Yet that hasn’t set him back at all, as the 24-year-old made the move to another pressure-filled environment in AC Milan, and has since excelled in a variety of different positions, be it down the right wing or in a more advanced central role.
13 goals and 18 assists in 66 games aren’t ground-breaking figures, but given that all but one of those have come in the last two seasons, he is clearly doing something right, and is developing into the player he threatened to be at Anfield.
Yet Spurs shouldn’t look at his struggles at Liverpool as a negative, they should look at it as an opportunity for Suso to prove a point in English football.
The talent is clearly there after two successful years at AC Milan, and who better to mastermind a resurgence in a young player than Pochettino, who isn’t afraid to give players an opportunity, as well as stand by them – just look at Moussa Sissoko this season after his horror show last time out.
Ultimately, the 24-year-old has left England and since gone on to be a much better player, and Spurs must look at that as opposed to his spell at Anfield.
And under Pochettino’s guidance, the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) could replicate his AC Milan form in England, and ultimately become the player he threatened to be while on the books at Liverpool.
