Liverpool’s collection of central midfielders is one of the finest the Premier League has to offer and Jurgen Klopp’s midfield trio have formed the backbone of their success in 2018.
Combining energy, dynamism and technical quality, the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Jordan Henderson have enabled Liverpool to dominate their opponents, but the latter hasn’t fully convinced the entirety of the fan-base.
Despite being Liverpool’s captain, Henderson (valued at £25.2 million by Transfermarkt) is far from first-choice at the club due to the extent of the competition for places in Jurgen Klopp’s starting eleven – perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson was right all along about his awkward running style.
Either way it’s clear that Liverpool supporters remain unconvinced by their captain, as TT’s Ally Darlow delved into Twitter on Monday and discovered plenty of fans directing strong words of criticism in his direction.
Indeed, the fans were eager to label Henderson as one of the weakest links in the squad and suggest that Liverpool’s strong is at it’s strongest when he is left on the substitutes bench.
Whilst the tweets of the Liverpool supporters who encouraged Henderson to leave Anfield were verging on the harsh side, it’s fair to say that he should be considered as nothing more than a squad rotation player when Klopp has all of his central midfield options available to him.
There is a level of balance which needs to be struck in Liverpool’s midfield and Henderson’s willingness to sit deeper and break up play offers Klopp the opportunity to unleash more technically gifted midfielders further forward.
However, Henderson is more naturally suited to a box-to-box or even an advanced role rather than a defensive-orientated one, but with competition from the likes of Naby Keita, Wijnaldum, Milner and Oxlade Chamberlain – following his return from injury – to compete with, he cannot be considered a first-choice player.
