Liverpool brushed aside Red Star Belgrade at Anfield in the Champions League last night after beating the Serbian side 4-0.
Goals from Mohamed Salah, who grabbed a brace, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane saw Liverpool climb to the top of Group C following Napoli’s 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s men firmly in the driving seat going into the next round of Champions League fixtures.
Overall, it was a brilliant team display on the night with Salah, Firmino and Mane standing out in particular.
However, as well as the trio, Georginio Wijnaldum also impressed and Transfer Tavern has since found plenty of Liverpool fans on Twitter singling the midfielder out for praise.
And those supporters are absolutely right to sing Wijnaldum praises with the 27-year-old’s good form stretching way beyond last night’s Champions League clash.
So far this season, £36m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Wijnaldum has been a mainstay in Klopp’s starting XI and is thriving there to say the least.
He has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers, putting in tireless display after tireless display while being so tidy in possession.
A No.10 at previous clubs Newcastle United and PSV Eindhoven, Wijnaldum has been given a much deeper midfield role at Liverpool under Klopp since arriving at Anfield back in the summer of 2016. And, in this moment of time, there probably is not a better midfielder at the club.
The Netherlands international has outshone the likes of new midfield signings Naby Keita and Fabinho and, if he can maintain the current level he is playing at, it will be difficult to see how either one could oust him out of the starting XI.
Salah, Firmino and Mane will continue to grab all of the headlines with their goal-scoring exploits, but Wijnaldum deserves just as much acclaim during this period of the campaign.
