The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern couldn’t be happier at the moment. They’re riding an incredible wave of success, having consolidated their spot in the top four and earned progression into the final four of the Champions League.
In truth, things couldn’t be any better, and that’s a credit to Jurgen Klopp.
However, it’s important that Liverpool don’t rest upon their laurels this summer, as they are on the verge of greatness. Another summer with a couple of major signings could see them continue their rise up the table, and that’s something that most fans can likely agree on.
However, one thing that fans can’t seemingly agree on is the prospect of signing Anthony Martial this summer. Last week, reports emerged via French publication RMC Sport suggesting that the attacker wants to leave Old Trafford this summer. Clearly one of Europe’s brightest young talents, the conversation quickly switched to which Premier League sides should land him.
Liverpool, you would think, would be a natural home. He’s pacy, technical and incredibly gifted, and so he’d be right at home alongside the likes of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.
However, it doesn’t appear as though supporters are unanimously behind the idea of signing Martial, who is rated at £58.5 million by Transfer Markt.
We recently ran a poll on the topic, and there is a clear sense of division amongst fans. The poll, which can be seen below, revealed that whilst 45% of Liverpool fans would like to see Martial at Anfield – 55% are happy for Klopp to pass – with neither side coming out as a clear victor.
On the surface, Martial would be a great signing, but looking at Liverpool’s current team – as many fans likely noted – does indicate that Liverpool don’t need him. They have Salah and Mane after all, and it’s tough to see him getting in the team ahead of them.
It would be a shame to lose out on a player of Martial’s quality, though, and that’s likely how those in support of a deal are interpreting it.
Whether Liverpool move for him remains to be seen, but whatever the outcome, it’s fair to say that fans will be left disappointed.
