The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were watching with a keen eye when they heard reports of an incredible defender potentially being available this summer.
The Sun reported earlier this week that John Stones, who is rated at £45 million by Transfer Markt, could be put up for sale this summer, with the Englishman falling down the pecking order at the Etihad.
Liverpool, though not explicitly linked with having an interest, would, on the surface, be a decent home for him. Jurgen Klopp has had great success with English talent, particularly with the likes of Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Furthermore, Liverpool clearly have a need for another central defender – with Virgil van Dijk the only genuinely world-class option that Klopp has at the moment.
However, the prospect of Stones moving to Anfield is clearly a divisive topic amongst Liverpool fans.
We recently polled supporters on that very topic, and it’s not an idea that resonates entirely with supporters. In response to the poll, which can be seen below, 55% of supporters voted against the idea – whilst 45% were in favour.
Clearly, then, a large percentage of fans wouldn’t be happy in either case, yet each idea does have merit.
Of course, Stones has impressed for Man City over the years, and his passing ability and defensive quality would make him a real asset for Liverpool. On the flip side, he is inconsistent, and massive errors have cost him since he moved to the Premier League.
Clearly, the Liverpool faithful can’t decide, and it will be interesting to see if Klopp decides to move for him if he is available this summer. It would be an intriguing acquisition, that’s for sure.
