Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign West Ham United central defender Issa Diop as they look to find cover for the injured Virgil van Dijk.

Hammers News reported that the Reds want Diop, via popular Irons insider ExWHUemployee, who believes Liverpool are looking to pounce on the French central defender. His future is currently said to be uncertain in East London.

ExWHUemployee has also said that Jurgen Klopp feels that he should sign the player – even though David Moyes wants to keep the Frenchman at London Stadium. He claimed that some other clubs are also interested in Diop, but he isn’t for sale at this point of time.

Out of favour

The 23-year-old defender has made only three Premier League appearances for the Hammers this season. His last appearance for Moyes’ men came back in early November in a game against Fulham (as per Transfermarkt).

Can you beat the Anfield 100 appearances quiz? First up, which Liverpool player was the last to reach 100 league games before Trent Alexander-Arnold did it this season?

Last season, Diop had made 35 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers and was a regular part of the club’s first-team. Jose Mourinho has previously described Diop as a ‘monster’ who dominated in the duels in a game against Manchester United in 2018.

Having said that, as many as 12 West Ham players picked up a higher ratings than Diop last season, so it perhaps feels like the Merseyside outfit are now scraping the barrel for a van Dijk replacement.
