Liverpool: Fans discuss referee news - Liverpool

Many Liverpool fans have been talking about the latest referee-related news that has emerged about their upcoming Premier League clash.

Jurgen Klopp’s men face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United in the upcoming weekend. It has now been announced that the referee for the game will be Paul Tierney. This comes some months after Klopp challenged Tierney for his failure to award a free-kick following a potential foul on Gini Wijnaldum in a match against Aston Villa last season, to which the referee was quick to fire a response back at The Reds boss.

Is it right to appoint Tierney for the Man Utd game?

Tierney has been in-charge of two Liverpool games this season. On one occasion, he sent off Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen in a Premier League game that saw the Reds win 2-0. He was also the man with the whistle during the Reds’ goalless draw against Newcastle United some weeks ago (as per the Mirror).

As a referee, Tierney has officiated in 10 Premier League games this season. He has sent off three players, two were shown a straight red card and one was dismissed for picking up two yellow cards (as per Transfermarkt).

Can you beat the Anfield 100 appearances quiz? First up, which Liverpool player was the last to reach 100 league games before Trent Alexander-Arnold did it this season?

He has refereed in 13 Liverpool games in his career so far and the Reds have won eight times when he’s been the man with the whistle. They have lost only twice (as per Transfermarkt).

The update about Tierney was relayed on Twitter by journalist Paul Gorst and many Liverpool fans weren’t happy with this decision.

What did Liverpool fans make of Tierney’s appointment?

“Paul Tierney has awarded Manchester United 5 penalties in his last 10 matches – and 1 against. He has awarded Liverpool 0 penalties in 14 matches – and 1 against (Chelsea). His place of residence is “Lancashire” according to Transfermarkt.”

“He’s definitely giving Man Utd a penalty or 2, can’t remember the last time he actually gave us any decisions and he loves to give Man Utd penalties.”
