Many Liverpool fans were left furious about a transfer update that was provided by The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
Ever since Joel Matip injured his adductor, manager Jurgen Klopp has been without any established centre-back to choose from, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both ruled out for the foreseeable future with serious knee injuries.
After James Pearce stated that there were no current plans to sign a defender in January with Lille’s Sven Botman heavily linked with an Anfield move, Ornstein confirmed this stance on the Ornstein and Chapman Podcast , which seemed to back up Pearce in relation to the champions’ intentions this month.
No centre-backs featured during Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton, with captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho coming together as s makeshift pair due to their teammates being absent.
Will Liverpool sign a defender in January?
With this in mind, these supporters were angry with the update, unable to compute why their club has such a stance which has the potential to completely derail their season.
Fans fuming with Ornstein update
“Disgrace if it works out this way.”
“This decision could cost us top 4, never mind the league”
“Then we can kiss any trophy goodbye this season”
“That means we should not hope much this season”
“If this is true, then that is unfortunate. This is the weakest group of title contenders in years and with the right signing we could separate from the pack. With no signing we will not win the league”
“Disgrace. I’m scared we won’t make top 4 you know”
