A number of Liverpool supporters have hailed Joel Matip's impressive performance in the Reds' 2-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's men were looking to record back-to-back Premier League wins to their start their season, with a full Anfield watching them take on the Clarets.

Liverpool's victory was rarely in doubt as their quality shone through on Saturday. Diogo Jota headed the hosts in front after a lovely cross by Kostas Tsimikas, before Sadio Mane added a second goal after the interval, finishing well after a slick team move.

Numerous players shone for Liverpool and Matip was certainly a standout performer, producing another cultured showing at the heart of the defence. He won 12 of his 14 duels against the Clarets, the most of any Reds player, and made six clearances as he demonstrated his defensive solidity.

Virgil van Dijk may have earned more acclaim after the match, but the 30-year-old was arguably every bit as good as his centre-back partner. Indeed, the Cameroonian earned the higher Sofascore rating of the pair (7.6 to 7.3).
