Liverpool fans look back over Rodgers’ Champions League disasterclass

Whilst the Liverpool of today under Jurgen Klopp might be a side capable of competing on multiple fronts both domestically and in Europe, it hasn’t always been that way. The Reds face Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League later and Liverpool fans page Empire of the Kop have tweeted the line-up that Brendan Rodgers sent out to face Real Madrid at The Bernabeu back in 2014.
Four Years Ago, almost to the day, we put out this side in the Champions League

Any side that contains Fabio Borini, Lazar Markovic, Joe Allen, Javier Manquillo and Simon Mignolet is going to seriously struggle. The fact that Rodgers put that side out is one thing, but the fact that this was in a huge game away at Real Madrid in the Champions League is a slap in the face to the club’s fans. Strangely, Liverpool only lost 1-0 in that game to a Karim Benzema first-half goal, but the result aside, the line-up is enough to give you nightmares.
If you were to compare, the side that most recently faced Real Madrid in the Champions League final last season then the difference that Klopp has made in his four years with the club is massive. None of Rodgers rag-tag eleven would make the starting eleven under Klopp now and that shows just how far they’ve come, and whilst the fans hate being reminded of those dark days, it proves as a subtle reminder of how good they now are.

The Reds will be hoping they never have to see another shocking team like that one at in Madrid and will be even more grateful for what Klopp has done on Merseyside after being reminded of that team.
