Anthony Taylor has been confirmed as the referee for Liverpool’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (@AnfieldWatch).
The Reds head into the game at the top of the table (BBC Sport), but will be looking to take all three points after failing to win for the first time last week against Manchester United where they drew 1-1 (BBC Sport).
Against the Red Devils, some Liverpool supporters were not happy with the performance of referee Martin Atkinson (Liverpool Echo), particularly due to the fact that he allowed United’s goal despite Divock Origi appearing to be fouled in the build-up.
And it seems that they are no happier with Taylor than they were with Atkinson last week, with several not impressed that he has been given the game at Anfield.
One of the reasons given by fans as to why he shouldn’t referee Liverpool is the fact that he was born in Wythenshawe in Manchester, traditionally a United stronghold as it is just six miles away from Old Trafford.
However, he is allowed to be in charge of this match as he has confirmed in the past that he does not support Liverpool’s bitter rivals, but is in fact an Altrincham fan (via Manchester Evening News).
Meanwhile, Liverpool are the most successful club among Taylor’s appearances as a Premier League referee – winning 21 meetings under the control of the 41-year-old – more than any other team.
Despite this, some Liverpool fans remain unhappy at the appointment…
God help us he’s worse than Atkinson
