Last night, Virgil van Dijk did what Virgil van Dijk does, played out of his skin, exonerated calmness to his teammates and delivered when he was called upon, netting a late equaliser to send the Netherlands into the UEFA Nations League semi-finals. His performances for club and country have been exemplary and a lot of Liverpool fans are calling for him to be named club captain.

The former Everton manager, Ronald Koeman obviously rates van Dijk very highly. The current Holland gaffer has instated VVD as his permanent captain and now the Reds want to see Jurgen Klopp follow suit and give Liverpool’s record signing the armband for his incredible performances over the last year since he signed for the club. There can be very little criticism of van Dijk, and it’s about time he was rewarded.
At the moment, the two official leadership figures at Anfield are Jordan Henderson and James Milner who Klopp has made his captain and vice-captain respectively. Unfortunately, seeing as van Dijk joined mid-season last year his name wasn’t in the hat for the captaincy debate, now, though he could be the man that Klopp need to lead his team out at Anfield as they aim to become champions of England for the first time since 1990.

Liverpool fans everywhere love van Dijk and will hope he gets the captain’s armband sooner rather than later.
