Last night Liverpool played in their fourth pre-season friendly of the summer, losing 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the USA. Central-defender, Joel Matip, who has a £22.5 million valuation on Transfermarkt, is the man that a lot of fans are talking about as he picked up another injury and was substituted in the first half. Jurgen Klopp gave an update on the defender on the Liverpool website.

Matip was supposedly going to be the answer to a lot of Liverpool’s defensive woes when he was signed. After seven years as a Schalke player, the Cameroonian defender left on a free transfer for Anfield in summer 2016 where many fans thought the towering defender would partner up with Dejan Lovren and solve the club’s problems. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case and it’s been Virgil van Dijk who has partnered up with Lovren.
This summer was a real chance for Matip to show the fans and his gaffer that he’s the man that they can rely on alongside van Dijk, as Lovren is far from convincing, despite his arrogant statement that he’s one of the best in the world. When the season comes back around it’s likely that the fans will be expecting to see Matip on the bench, however, if the big man can recover from his latest setback and show the fans what they’ve been missing then there’s every chance he can become a regular on Merseyside again.
With that in mind, here’s the Liverpool fans’ Matip verdict:

It’s time to say goodbye to him.
Add Lallana on that list.
Sturridge I’m keeping my eye on you

As you can see, the fans don’t hold out much hope of Matip becoming a key player for them as his injuries continue to hinder his Liverpool career.
