Trent Alexander-Arnold has been named on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or (via Sky Sports).
Does Jurgen Klopp need to win the league this season?
The 21-year-old was one of seven Liverpool players listed, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Georginio Wijnaldum, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson also up for the award (BBC Sport)
Whilst he is not one of the favourites to win it, with Lionel Messi and Virgil van Dijk the front-runners according to Sky Bet, the right-back certainly deserves his place on the shortlist.
He was after all a key member of the Liverpool team which won the UEFA Champions League in June. He contributed with two crucial assists as the Reds beat Barcelona 4-0 in the home leg of their semi-final tie, and also played the full 90 minutes against Tottenham Hotspur in the final (via Transfermarkt).
2019 has truly been an excellent year for the England international. He managed to provide 13 assists after the new year in the 18/19 season (Transfermarkt) and has already scored one goal and created three assists at the start of the 19/20 campaign (Transfermarkt).
Naturally, the Liverpool fans are delighted for Alexander-Arnold and plenty of them have taken to Twitter to congratulate their young defender for being shortlisted.
Here is what some of them had to say…
Brilliant news. Best RB in Europe and it’s not even his natural position. What a guy.
