Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hopes that Xherdan Shaqiri isn’t too far away from returning to training (via liverpoolfc.com).
Does Shaqiri deserve to play more?
The Swiss international has been struggling of late with a calf injury and hasn’t been in the Reds’ matchday squad for any of their last three Premier League fixtures (via Transfermarkt).
Klopp had hoped that the former Stoke City man would be back in training this week, but as of yet that hasn’t happened. However, he doesn’t believe that he is too far away as the injury isn’t anything too major.
Speaking to the official Liverpool website, the German manager said: “We expected him to be back this week, but now he is not here obviously so we will see when he can be back.
“It’s a really specific thing for him. It is not a big thing, it just takes a little bit longer than we expected and that’s all.”
Prior to his injury, Shaqiri had failed to get many minutes under his belt. Indeed, he has played just 11 minutes of Premier League football so far this term, as well as just three minutes in the Champions League (Transfermarkt).
He is very much considered a back-up option to Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah who are both regular starters (Transfermarkt). But they could have arguably done with Shaqiri on Sunday when Salah missed the game against Manchester United through injury (Transfermarkt).
Liverpool fans are desperate for the Switzerland international to return to full fitness soon, and many want him to be given more of a chance in the team when he is available…
