A number of Liverpool fans have been calling for Gini Wijnaldum to leave the club this summer, agreeing with comments made by Reds legend Graeme Souness.
The Dutchman arrived at Anfield from Newcastle United back in 2016 and has become a stalwart for the Merseyside giants. Wijnaldum has gone on to make 230 appearances to date, winning both the Champions League and Premier League among other trophies.
The 30-year-old has been a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield, often not making the headlines but proving to be an influential performer for the Reds. He has scored some big goals in his time at Anfield, including the opener against Middlesbrough on the final day of the 2016/17 league season as Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a top four finish, as well as a brace in the epic 4-0 Champions League win over Barcelona two years later.
Someone who has been critical of him is Souness, with the former Reds captain writing in The Times about how speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future could potentially be having a negative impact on his teammates. The 67-year-old wrote:
“Wijnaldum is leaving for Barcelona and I’m not sure how I’d have reacted to a player who made it clear he was off, how that goes down in a dressing-room. The players may make a joke of it, but it also may not sit well with all of them.”
Liverpool fans want Wijnaldum to leave
These Liverpool fans took to Twitter to call for Wijnaldum to leave, also lambasting his form which has seen him score just two league goals all season.
“Such a joke that he has the armband“
“He’s been absolutely terrible lately“
“Well he’s not alone there at LFC this season. But what does one expect as his mind is on trying to get big contract here or abroad“
“Drop him! His play hasn’t shown the passion and intensity of previous years“
“Been saying this. Play the players who want to pull on the shirt“
“It might come from Souness, but that is true though. Klopp has to play Gini just because he doesn’t have a better option in his hands. Once we get a proper replacement that is of the same calibre or better, this guy can just leave“
