It has been a strong start to the 2019/20 season for Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
The Cameroonian has picked up where he left off last season and has started five of the Reds’ six Premier League fixtures alongside Virgil van Dijk, helping the team climb to the top of the table.
He has now overtaken the likes of Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren to partner the Dutchman at Anfield.
As a result of Matip’s impressive performances, his manager Jurgen Klopp singled him out for praise ahead of their visit to Sheffield United.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the German said: “Joel was always an incredible talent, he played as an 18-year-old boy already for Schalke in the Bundesliga, so that’s not that easy.
“Maybe the respect in England for the Bundesliga is not too big but it’s a strong league and he played there and he was always a standout player for them, a really fixed point in their defence very early in his life.
“In a world of big transfer fees, signing a player like Joel Matip on a free transfer is incredible, that was maybe one of the best pieces of business we did in the last years. So yes, all good really.
“Joel is in a really good moment – long, long, long may it continue. That would be really cool.”
It is not only Klopp who has been impressed with Matip’s performances either. Most of the Liverpool supporters have been in awe of the 28-year-old for the past year and many of them would like to see him offered a new contract.
Here is what a few Reds fans have been saying on Twitter…
