The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were celebrating the news of Virgil van Dijk’s arrival last night. The Reds have confirmed that van Dijk will join the club from January 1st, leading to many a bottle of champagne being consumed on our premises.
However, there is a slightly more sombre mood in the pub today, owing to a report from the Times. According to the Times, Jordan Henderson’s injury could be worse than first feared, with concern now raising that he could be unavailable throughout the entirety of January.
Henderson, of course, limped off when Arsenal took on Liverpool over the Christmas period.
Quotes from Jurgen Klopp, via Ben Dinnery, seemed to suggest yesterday that though Henderson would miss Liverpool’s next game, he could be available thereafter. This report from the Times, though, suggests otherwise.
Indeed, it’s a massive blow for the club. Henderson, though not the most popular player at Anfield, remains crucial to Jurgen Klopp’s plans. He’s Liverpool’s captain, after all, and the lack of his presence in the midfield is frustrating for the club.
Given how many games Liverpool will play in January, Klopp’s squad will be stretched to its limits, particularly if another midfielder suffers an injury.
Contrary to popular belief, Henderson is a very solid player. He rarely has a bad game, and as Liverpool’s captain, his influence is far more significant than just that of a midfielder.
Klopp has options, particularly with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain emerging as a fantastic option, but he’ll no doubt be hoping to get Henderson back as quickly as possible.
