It’s a link that the fans will be far from happy with but Liverpool’s name has now been put together with that of former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, with the Daily Mail insisting that the Merseyside club are frontrunners to sign the 33-year-old Dutchman as cover for injury prone Fernando Torres with a loan deal his preferred method of getting the forward.
Van Nistelrooy is vastly unpopular with Liverpool fans having been a key player for Manchester United for several years, but Benitez is looking for a cheap striker who can score goals and van Nistelrooy does tick both those boxes. Yet Rafa is keen to make it a loan deal so as to save money and so he does not agree a longer deal for a player who, at 33, has already seen his best days. The striker has already been linked to a number of clubs including English sides Arsenal and Blackburn but Liverpool are the latest team to be thrown into the running.
It is no secret that Liverpool are having a poor season with the club already having been knocked out of the Carling Cup and the Champion’s League and with the team looking in danger of losing their regular top four spot to one of Tottenham or Aston Villa. Strengthening is definitely needed and Rafa is willing to look past the hatred felt at Anfield for the former United striker to get his side striking cover which could provide goals. If the transfer does take place then there are sure to be many angry Liverpool fans.
[Is there any substance to this and should this rumour Fly or Die?]
