Liverpool fans are delighted in the Football Transfer Tavern after the Daily Mail revealed that Bayern Munich’s young winger Xherdan Shaqiri will be allowed to leave in January.
The Reds have previously attempted to sign 23-year-old and failed but they have been given a huge boost to hear that Bayern are willing to let him leave after the Swiss international failed to secure a place in the first team.
There had been high hopes for Shaqiri since his move to the Bavarian giants from FC Basel in 2012 and although he has shown great potential and glimpses of brilliance, he has struggled to perform consistently at that level.
Many saw him as a future replacement for either Arjen Robben or Franck Ribery but it appears Pep Guardiola deems him surplus to requirements.
The president of the German champions Franz Beckenbauer admitted that Shaqiri’s future was in doubt after the playmaker only managed 26 starts for Bayern during his career at the Allianz Arena thus far.
“Bayern have already sent out a signal and indicated to him that he can probably go in the winter break, when he wants,’ added Beckenbauer.
“I think it’s a shame because he is a great talent,’ the 69-year-old added.
Shaqiri revealed earlier in the season that Liverpool did make a move to sign him but Bayern ultimately blocked the move, meaning it didn’t materialise.
“Liverpool made a bid for me before the World Cup but Bayern put their foot down and told me, ‘We’re not going to sell you'”, said Shaqiri.
