Liverpool supporters have been somewhat frustrated in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team concede a late leveller to only end up drawing 2-2 at home to fellow Champions League chasers Tottenham on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the North London side off the back of breezing past struggling Huddersfield Town in their preceding league outing, thus setting them up perfectly for an encounter against a fellow member of the so-called ‘big six’. And the Reds looked on course to clinch all three points when Mohamed Salah’s brace gave them a 2-1 lead, only for Harry Kane to atone for an earlier penalty miss by slotting home a 95th minute spot-kick to deservedly seal a point for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are hoping their team can get back to winning ways when they travel to struggling Southampton on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they have ended their interest in bringing Thomas Lemar to Anfield in the summer.
And while this appears on the surface to be a bold move, it could well turn out to be the right decision given the Frenchman’s struggles so far this season, as well as the extortionate price-tag on his shoulders.
Ultimately, interest from the Premier League first become apparent during the summer following the 22-year-old’s exceptional season for Monaco, in which he netted 14 goals and laid on 17 assists to help Leonardo Jardim’s men end Paris Saint-Germain’s four-year dominance of French football by winning the Ligue 1 title.
Clearly, there can be no doubts about Lemar’s ability following a season like that, but those doubts must now be creeping in given he hasn’t been able to back it up this term.
The France international has scored a paltry three goals in 23 games in all competitions for Jardim’s side this season, which is a far cry away from last season’s tally, and clearly not befitting of a £90 million player.
To put that into some context, Leicester City wanted around £95 million for winger Riyad Mahrez, who has scored nine goals and laid on nine assists for the Foxes this term, and of course has proven his capabilities in the English top-flight.
And even that figure for the 26-year-old is seen to be pretty high, so for Monaco to expect £90 million for Lemar seems remarkably ambitious for a player who has directly had a hand in just eight goals this season.
Yes, the 22-year-old was outstanding last season and rightly deserved credit for his efforts, but he hasn’t looked like and hasn’t returned what one would expect from a £90 million player this term.
There may well be better options out there for Liverpool at that price – as such the Reds have made the right decision ending their interest in the 22-year-old.
