Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the early stages of 2018 after seeing their side extend their unbeaten Premier League run to 13 matches with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Burnley on New Year’s Day.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the new calendar year fourth in the English top-flight after winning successive matches against Swansea City and Leicester City, yet a tricky start to 2018 was in store at Turf Moor against Sean Dyche’s seventh place Clarets. And so it proved as although Sadio Mane gave the Reds the lead on the hour mark, Burnley levelled through Johann Gudmundsson three minutes from time, only for centre-back Ragnar Klavan to crop up as the unlikely hero by heading home a Liverpool winner in the fourth minute of injury-time to seal a crucial three points for Klopp’s side.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few hours or so, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Telegraph, which outlines that Liverpool will hold out for a substantial fee following developments in the Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona transfer saga.
The Spanish giants tried their hand with multiple big money bids for the 25-year-old last summer only for the Reds to stand firm and knock back all offers, seeing the Brazil star remain at Anfield for the first half of the campaign.
And the attacker certainly proved his worth with 12 goals and nine assists in all competitions for the Merseyside giants, so much so that Barcelona’s interest has remained intact for much of the season ahead of the January window.
And reports suggest that Liverpool will seek an ‘astronomical’ fee for the 25-year-old this month, this all after Barca’s shirt manufacturers Nike posted an advert on their online store detailing that a Coutinho shirt could be bought by supporters.
And this calamity could well have riled the Premier League outfit even further in a transfer saga which looks set to continue over the coming weeks.
Landlord’s verdict: Philippe Coutinho’s proposed move to Barcelona dominated the summer transfer window, yet the 25-year-old deserves credit for focusing on football since then with 12 goals and nine assists for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Yet his fine form appears to have kept the Spanish giants interested in his services, to the point that Nike, the club’s shirt manufacturers, posted on advert on the online store suggesting that the Brazil star will make the move to the Nou Camp, as a Barca shirt with Coutinho’s name on it was available for purchase.
And reports suggest that Liverpool will seek a substantial fee for the 25-year-old, with it again suggesting that the Reds will stand firm like they did in the summer in trying to keep Coutinho at Anfield beyond the January deadline.
