It has been reported on Sky Sports News that Liverpool are considering a double swoop for Aston Villa wingers Stewart Downing and Ashley Young.
Villa, having splashed out on Jean Makoun and Darren Bent in the last week, may be looking to recoup some money and in Liverpool and Kenny Dalglish they could have a willing buyer. After Roy Hodgson’s attempts to buy Downing last summer, Dalglish could continue this pursuit as he tries to bring some much-needed creativity and width to Liverpool’s midfield.
And would Gerard Houllier let them both go? As the Frenchman tries to revamp his squad – whilst battling relegation – Downing and Young could both be allowed to leave, but at what cost?
Surely, as both quality players, they will be made to stay at Villa Park? Or is Houllier trying to exorcise the Midlands outfit of any hint of Martin O’Neill’s reign, namely his obsession with paying over the odds for young English players?
And are these two the answer to Liverpool’s problems? They’d definitely be a start at least.
