Liverpool fans are raising their eyebrows here in the Football Transfer Tavern as it has been claimed by the Daily Mail that Pepe Reina is ready to welcome Simon Mignolet to the club; not depart because of his arrival.
The long serving keeper has been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer and it had been thought Reina was eyeing a move to Barcelona, leading to a move for Sunderland stopper Mignolet, yet now Reina has claimed that he is happy to stay at the club in ‘principle’ as his life is in Liverpool.
As most of us thought, the arrival of the Belgium number two would put an end to the Spanish keeper’s time at Anfield once and for all, but instead it certainly comes as a shock for Reina to not only welcome the signing but also claim he is happy to help, even if it leaves him on the sidelines.
The keeper noted: “It hasn’t changed a bit. I said it many times I am really comfortable and very happy in Liverpool.
“Every team needs competition. It is more than welcome, and if it is finally done I welcome him and anything he needs, I’m here.”
Reina of course has three years left to run on his contract and the idea of an increasingly competitive squad is something Brendan Rodgers is working to build.
The manager claimed that: “One of the things we’re trying to build is a competitive squad.
“Our squad was very thin last year and it was great being we were able to introduce a few young players from our academy that but it’s very important that we have competition in every position and that wasn’t always the case.”
