Liverpool fans would be forgiven if they were feeling tense at the moment as they continue in their quest to win silverware this season.
Nerves may be eased with the fact that the club have one of the best defences in European football, however, it appears Jurgen Klopp is keen on strengthening it in the summer transfer window.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Noticias de Gipuzkoa, Liverpool have already made a ‘proposal’ for Real Sociedad’s Diego Llorente with the centre-back appearing to have convinced them after being watched a number of times.
It is understood that the Premier League side are set to test the La Liga outfit with an offer of around €30million (£25.7m), although it is noted that his release clause stands at €50m (£42.8m).
The report also suggests that the arrival of Llorente – who is also wanted by arch-rivals Everton – would allow for Joel Matip to return to Germany.
Despite having one of the best defensive lines in European football – when you consider how many goals have been conceded over the duration of the campaign – Liverpool appear to be keen on reinforcing it.
The Reds have been linked with a number of targets recently as that area of the pitch has been stretched at times with the likes of Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren both spending significant time on the sidelines.
Llorente could be an excellent addition to help further strengthen the defence as he has been in solid form for Real Sociedad this season and the 25-year-old has certainly started to show what he is capable of producing after failing to impress at Real Madrid.
He can also play as a defensive midfielder, offering Klopp some additional options, and does not appear to be goal-shy, having recorded seven last season – but is yet to net one in the current campaign.
Whether an offer of €30m is enough to convince Sociedad to sell him remains to be seen, with it likely that the Basque outfit will demand somewhere a lot closer to the €50m fee he has in his contract.
With Matip seemingly being allowed to leave the club, those at the club may find it a little strange as he has had to play a key role for Klopp’s side and has not really looked out of place in the team with his performances.
Liverpool fans, do you think Llorente would be able to improve your defence at the expense of Matip being allowed to leave Anfield? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
