Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that the Reds must sign a centre back in January after Joel Matip limped off injured against West Bromwich Albion.
Carragher makes his views clear
Jurgen Klopp’s side were largely frustrated as they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Baggies at Anfield, after failing to capitalise on Sadio Mane’s first-half strike. Semi Ajayi equalised for the visitors as the visitors managed to take away a point back to The Hawthorns.
Despite providing the assist for Mane’s goal, Matip was forced to make way for Rhys Williams after suffering yet another injury – a scenario that is becoming all too familiar with the Kop faithful.
“It’s a massive worry but not a new worry,” he said.
“Joel Matip will not play every game between now and the end of the season, you know that even before the injury today, and that’s why it’s paramount that Liverpool sign someone in January.
“I said that as soon as Virgil van Dijk had his injury against Everton. Fabinho’s gone there and looked like a top-class centre-back in that position so maybe people at the club felt the need wasn’t as urgent but Joel Matip is just too injury prone.
“His body just can’t take the rigours of playing in Premier League football week in week out, we know that since he joined, he’s a really good player.
Transfer Tavern Verdict
While Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been ruled out for significant amounts of time, this is not the first injury that Matip has had this campaign – leaving Liverpool with no established defenders at Klopp’s disposal.
This begs the question of whether the Cameroonian centre-back needs to be moved on in the summer, due to the fact his reliance, in terms of availability, will be called into question.
That being said, this is a decision that Klopp, along with sporting director Michael Edwards and Henry himself, need to make as soon as possible as the Reds are short in terms of defensive options.
