The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating this afternoon’s clash with Manchester City in the Premier League, convinced that they could be the first team to inflict a Premier League defeat upon them this season. But Liverpool are also set to go head to head in battle with Manchester City off the pitch too.
According to The Mirror, Liverpool are the latest club to express an interest in signing Arsenal contract rebel Alexis Sanchez. Liverpool will battle Manchester City and Manchester United for his signature.
Sanchez was left out of Arsenal’s squad to face Bournemouth today, further fuelling talk of his departure. The Chile international is out of contract at the end of this season and Arsenal need to sell now if they want to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer.
Manchester City were the front runners for a long while but now Man United have entered the race to sign the 29-year-old, possibly offering out of favour attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan in exchange. Liverpool are now set to rival the Manchester duo for Sanchez as they search for a Philippe Coutinho replacement.
Coutinho went to Barcelona earlier this month for £145m – making him the world’s second most expensive player – and Liverpool have cash to splash on the Arsenal man, who is rated at £35m by the North London club.
Sanchez would be a perfect replacement for Coutinho at Liverpool as he is in the prime of his career and a proven success in the Premier League. They can compete financially with the Manchester clubs but Jurgen Klopp needs to convince Sanchez that joining Liverpool would give him a better shot at the Premier League title than he currently has at Arsenal. If the Chilean wants immediate success, Manchester City is the obvious destination but he may just be tempted by a project at Man United or Liverpool.
