There are some astonished looks in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening after Sky Sports suggests that Norwich City are looking to sign highly regarded Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld – a transfer target of Liverpool this summer.
The 24-year-old Belgian international was a mainstay in the Amsterdam-based team that marched to the Eredivisie title last term, performing consistently in 45 games for the club.
Alderweireld’s agent has made the suggestion that the Canaries have contacted Ajax about a possible summer transfer to Carrow Road for the Belgian centre-back.
“I understand they made contact with Marc Overmars [Ajax’s director of football],” Alderweireld’s agent, Soren Lerby, told De Telegraaf.
“Toby has left the pre-season camp of Ajax in Austria due to personal reasons and I haven’t spoken with him about Norwich yet.
“I don’t know if Toby is interested in a move or not.”
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is a keen admirer and may yet challenge Norwich for his signature as he looks to bring the player to Anfield as a replacement for Jamie Carragher.
