Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that midfielder Thiago Alcantara will not be fit in time to face West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
Klopp rules out Thiago
The 29-year-old has been working his way back to full fitness after picking up a knee injury during his side’s 2-2 draw against Everton back in October.
Thiago, who made the hugely anticipated move to Anfield in the summer for £20m, has only played 135 minutes of Premier League football, which included an impressive 45-minute cameo against Chelsea earlier in the campaign.
Unfortunately for Liverpool fans, they will have to wait a bit longer for his return to the side, despite being pictured in first-team training yesterday.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via James Pearce), Klopp confirmed that the visit of West Brom will come too soon for Thiago to make his comeback, who was previously described as a “coach’s dream” by Bayern boss Hansi Flick.
Transfer Tavern Verdict
This will not be the news that Liverpool supporters will have wanted to hear – especially considering Thiago’s clever vision and passing could have unlocked what will inevitably be compact set-up from Sam Allardyce, so this is no doubt a blow to still be without the Spaniard.
But, because of the injuries that the German tactician currently has on his hands, it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise in the long-term that he is not rushing the Spaniard back into action.
With some huge games on the horizon and with the traditional FA Cup tie to come in January, there will plenty of opportunities for Thiago to feature, but he is certainly going to be a miss when Big Sam’s bus rolls up at Anfield on Sunday.
