Another day, another Liverpool left-back story, but this time the player in question has Premier League and Champions League experience, is unsure of his future and already has a rival for his place… interesting.
Both Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool and the Old Lady of Turin, Juventus are reportedly interested in taking Arsenal left-back Gael Clichy away from the Emirates this summer in a £6million deal.
French international Clichy is one of the few players at Arsenal actually to have won anything with the club, having been at the club since 2003, but his time under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger may be coming to an end. Arsenal are concerned that Clichy, whose contract expires at the end of next season, will not sign a new deal at the club where he made his name and are believed to be willing to listen to summer offers for their experienced left-back.
Liverpool’s need for a decent left-back is widely-known, and Clichy is the latest of many left-sided defenders being linked with a move to Anfield – but the flying Frenchman may stand out above the rest in Kenny Dalglish’s mind due to his vast experience in the Premier League, which he won in 2004, and the Champions League, Clichy played in the 2006 Final loss to Barcelona.
However, Liverpool will have to battle Italian giants, Juventus, for Clichy’s signature, as the Notts County rip-off merchants are looking to replace 33-year-old World Cup winner, Fabio Grosso. The possibility of playing in Serie A is thought to appeal to the 25-year-old Clichy, but he may yet be tempted to join Kenny Dalglish’s Anfield revolution.
Clichy has recently admitted he will come to a decision on his future at the end of this season, and with Arsenal fearing a bosman free transfer next season, Juve and Liverpool’s interest could see the Frenchman, who could cost as little as £6million, bring an end to his 8 year stay in North London with a move to the North-West – of England or Italy.
