Though it’s been a decent season so far, the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been left wanting more. The Reds have been on a steady rise over the last few years, and now the Anfield faithful want them to take it to the next level. For that to happen, though, a few more Mohamed Salah-level signings are required, and according to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds are plotting exactly that in January.
The Liverpool Echo report that the Reds remain keen on Virgil van Dijk, with a January move said to be ‘likely’ to be made. They were, of course, embroiled in a scandal over his proposed signing over the summer, but it appears as though those wounds have healed over the last few months.
This report comes off the back of an update from Goal yesterday, who suggested that Man City would be in the race for the forward. According to this latest update, though, it won’t be easy for the Citizens, with Liverpool still firmly in the race too.
The defence has been a real problem area for Liverpool this season. Regular members of the team including Alberto Moreno, Dejan Lovren and even the usually consistent Joel Matip have been seriously poor at points this season, and they’ve cost the Reds points along the way. Central defence is where the real problems lie, with none of Klopp’s options covering themselves in glory this season.
With Liverpool now through to the last 16 of the Champions League, that’s a real worry, with a few of our resident Reds already having nightmares about Lionel Messi running through what can only be described as an extremely leaky defence come February or March.
A move for van Dijk would make sense, then, given how solid he has been in the Premier Leauge this season. Any move, though, is far from a foregone conclusion.
Van Dijk would be a top signing, but it’s clearly not going to be easy.
One mistake that Liverpool can’t make is to put all of their eggs in this basket, as they did over the summer. They need to sign a central defender in January, and if Man City win this race, they need to have a few other options lined up.
A move certainly is possible, though, with van Dijk likely still keen to make the switch.
