The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Jurgen Klopp to replace both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet. The duo have seriously struggled to impress the Anfield faithful over the last few years, with the goalkeeping spot undoubtedly the weak link in Klopp’s squad.
Mundo Deportivo report that Liverpool – alongside Man City – are keen on Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin – having recently been tracking him. Significantly, though, if Liverpool are to have any chance of landing him, Klopp will need to act fast, as he is currently on course to join Real Sociedad.
A move to Sociedad is not yet complete, and as Mundo Deportivo report, Liverpool and Man City’s interest could slow the operation down, but it’s safe to say that the Reds have some real catching up to do.
The extent of their interest remains to be seen, and whether a move is forthcoming has not been confirmed, but their interest appears concrete from the perspective of Mundo Deportivo.
An 18-year-old shot-stopper, Lunin currently plays for Zorya Luhansk in the Ukranian league. He’s obviously untested in the bigger leagues, but the fact that some top clubs are keen certainly suggests that he is very good at what he does.
In truth, it doesn’t look like Liverpool are likely to win this one. Their interest in making an actual move isn’t that clear, and they’re already quite a few steps behind in the race.
That being said, we aren’t sure he’s what Liverpool need right now anyway. They’ve struggled with poor goalkeepers for too long, and investing in a young, unproven 18-year-old might not be the solution that is required. They need proven quality, and at present, he simply is not that. He may move to Spain and surprise everyone, and in truth he could be the perfect solution for Klopp – but it’s definitely a risk.
