The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern think that Emre Can is one of their most important players. The German has been a regular in Jurgen Klopp’s team this term, and with good reason. The way he controls the ball, works hard for his team and moves the ball forward is a joy to behold, and he’s certainly a fan favourite in the pub. The latest reports filtering into the Transfer Tavern from the Daily Mail have given rise to real concern, then.
According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool are very keen to agree fresh terms with Can over a new deal, but there appears to be a massive problem for the club. Reportedly insistent on the inclusion of a release clause, negotiations with Can are said to have reached an impasse – with the German now looking set to leave at the end of the season on a free following the expiry of his current deal.
This would, of course, be a massive failing on the club’s behalf for a number of reasons. On a basic level, the level that he has performed at this season has been phenomenal, and he’s been very deserving of his first-team berth. Perhaps more significantly, though, the failure to agree terms will also mean that they will be unable to get a single penny for the German upon his departure – and that in of itself is a huge blow.
Can, of course, would be worth a princely sum based on his current form, but now it looks as though another team will land themselves a steal due to Liverpool’s failings.
It’s certainly disrupted the mood of the fans in the Transfer Tavern.
Can is important to this team, and so it’s frustrating that it has come to this. You could argue that his refusal to change his stance has given Liverpool little choice, but there’s surely some way around this situation.
Alas, it appears not, and now Liverpool will feel the consequences.
