Former Premier League star Kevin Phillips has been left thoroughly impressed with what he’s seen from young Liverpool defender Billy Koumetio.
Koumetio thrills Phillips
The 18-year-old emerged as a second-half substitute during his side’s 1-1 draw against FC Midtjylland in what was his first-team debut and left a lasting impression.
During the encounter, Koumetio won four aerial duels, made three tackles and seven clearances in what was a dominant defensive display from the 6 foot 3 Frenchman (Whoscored).
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips, who scored a total of 190 goals across his entire career, was stunned by Koumetio’s impressive showing and paid tribute to manager Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool as a whole for the talented youngsters they are bringing through.
“It’s absolutely brilliant,” he said. “Jurgen Klopp has got some great young players there and he is not afraid to throw them in at the deep end. Klopp works with these youngsters day in day out so he knows they can step up.
“It was an impressive debut and what a bright future he will have at the football club.
“Liverpool could buy any player in the world but they are also showing they can rely on the young players coming through. It is so exciting for the club moving forward. Credit to Koumetio and Klopp.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
It’s difficult to disagree with what Phillips is saying, as the France U18 international is having an impressive campaign so far, with assistant manager Pep Ljinders describing him as “unbelievable” (via the club’s official YouTube channel).
Koumetio has all of the characteristics to become a top-class centre half at an elite level, but must ensure that his development is well nurtured by the coaching staff in Kirkby.
That being said, he will have to convince Klopp, going forward, that he has what it takes to play regular first-team football at Anfield.
