Liverpool landing £22.5m-rated assist-king would end awful Alberto Moreno’s career at Anfield

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were absolutely delighted by the rise of Andrew Robertson last season after he stepped in to replace Alberto Moreno in November before cementing his place at left-back for the remainder of the season.

After four years at the club Moreno has done little to convince the Reds faithful propping up our bar that he has the ability to succeed in the Premier League. In the final-third Moreno has demonstrated a decent ability to deliver telling crosses and link-up with Liverpool’s left-winger to great effect, but defensively his frailties have regularly been exposed.

Although it’s not a priority for Klopp this summer, the signing of a new left-back to replace Moreno and challenge Robertson for a starting berth should be on the agenda and, according to a recent report from Portuguese media A Bola, it appears Liverpool have plans to sign a new full-back. The report claims that Liverpool and facing a two-way battle with Chelsea to secure the signature of Porto’s Alex Telles whom has a release clause worth €40 million.

The Brazilian left-back was in fine form for the Portuguese giants last season as he managed to provide a whopping 20-assists from 45 appearances in all-competitions. The Marauding full-back certainly proved his worth in the final-third with his decisive end product, but there are some doubts about his ability to remain defensively solid in the Premier League.

Either way, it appears that Klopp has plans to bring a new left-back to the club, and if he is successful in his pursuit of Telles then his arrival will force Moreno to embark on a new challenge away from Anfield. Now that Robertson has firmly cemented his place as Liverpool’s first-choice left-back, Telles’ arrival would leave no room for Moreno in the first-team squad, never-mind the starting eleven next season.

Moreno demonstrated notable signs of improvement at the beginning of the most recent campaign so there’s no doubt he’ll have offers on the table this summer, but it seems unlikely that another top-six side will be interested in his signature after struggling to make his mark at Anfield.
